Drum Lesson #9
A drummer should be capable
of playing a drum fill anywhere in a measure and come back in on
time. Too many times a drummer will play a fill and come
back " off time." This can trip up other performing musicians
number of measures from the point the drummer comes back into the
beat. If they trip up an audition to a music college they can be
barred entry to say Berklee college of music in Boston. (Then
again, maybe they will accept you, take your money and then flunk you
out.) Here is a simple, but long exercise to help overcome this.The exercise on paper will look like a simple rock beatfor one measure. The second measure will have the numbers "1,2,3, 4,". For the simple beat we will use 8 8th notes on the hi hat. (4/4 time 4 beats per measure with the quarter note getting the beat.) With your lead hand, (but,eventually switching hands to lead on the high hat to be ambidextrous on the drums.) it will be counted as: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +. The + will be said as "and." When you say any of these numbers plus and hit your hi - hat. While you are doing this other drums will be accompanied. When you count 1 hit your bass drum. (Hence your hi hat and bass drum will come down at the same exact time.) On the and of one just hit your hi hat. On 2 hit your snare and hi hat at the same time. your lead hand will hit the hi hat on the and of 2. On 3 hit your hi hat and bass drum at the same time. On the and of 3 just hit your hi hat. On 4 hit your hi hat and snare drum at the same time. On the and of 4 hit your hi- hat.
For the second measure, all of this will be repeated with a variation every time you run through the measure. The variation will be a one note fill. ( That's exactly what it is, one quarter note played on any drum that will last equally to two 8th notes. Then when you crash on a crash cymbal, the same thing. One note lasting for a count of a quarter note (or two 8th notes. ) So, after playing a measure of the beat on the second measure when you say 1 you hit a one note fill and when your on 2 you hit your crash cymbal. Hence on the second measure when you say one you hit a tom, say and ( + ) and do nothing. On 2 hit your crash cymbal and on the and of two ( +) hit nothing. Now on the second measure when you say 3 you come back into the beat. That is to say your hi- hat and bass drum will be hit at the same time. Hit the hi- hat on the and (+) of 3. On 4 hit your hi-hat and snare drum at the same time. On the and (+) of four hit your hi-hat. Go back to playing the first measure with your bass drum on the 1 ( and also on the ) 3. ("and also on the," is in parenthesis not to be confused with an" and" in the measure.) (And) your snare being hit on the 2 ( and also on the ) 4 count. Hit hat on all notes of 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + . On the next run through on the second measure will be a variation. Play the 1 on the Hi- hat and bass drum. Play the and (+) of one on the hi-hat. On 2 play your one beat fill. On the and of 2 play nothing. On 3 hit your crash cymbal and hold it so nothing is played on the and (+) of 3. On 4 come back into the beat with your hi-hat and snare coming down at the same time. On the and (+) of 4 just hit your hi-hat. This may seen easy on paper. However, when you play a fill and crash afterwards, drummers usually have the habit of coming back into the beat with the hi-hat and bass drum. This time when you come back into the beat with the hi-hat and snare drum.
Go back top playing the first measure. As you return to the second measure, play your hi-hat and bass drum on the 1. Hit just your hi-hat on the and (+) of one. Hit your hi-hat and snare drum on 2. On the and (+) of two just hit your hi-hat. On 3 hit your one beat fill. Play nothing on the and (+) of 3. On four hit your crash cymbal. On the and (+) of four hit nothing. Go back to playing the first measure. On the next time the second measure is played your one note fill will come in on the 4 and your crash will be on the 1 of the first measure. Then come back into the beat with the snare drum and hi-hat on the first measure. When you mastered this have your opposite hand lead on the hi-hat. so if your right handed and are used to crossing your arms with the right hand on the hi- hat and left on the snare drum, do the opposite. Play with "Open arms," so your left hand is on the hi-hat and your right hand is on the snare.
You will want to expand on this with two note fills, triplets, four note fills, 8th notes, 16th notes, having the whole second measure a fill, and then not all notes being played even though they are counted to make sure you don't repeat fills. When you mastered this and go into a recording studio you will feel more comfortable knowing your can't just hit the bass drum coming back into the beat when your suppose to hit your snare drum.
