Guitar: Lesson 25

Intro to Improvisation, Hearing out-of key notes

By Zack Cart

Prerequisites :

You should be able to understand and perform the concepts and techniques outlined in the following lessons before attempting this lesson:

Guitar: Lessons 1-24

Music Theory: Lessons 1-16

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this lesson, we will continue with our improvisation or "soloing" work, along more or less the same line. However, the chords will be throwing us the occasional loop. Just as we began to learn which notes sound good, bad, or interesting with which chords in the last lesson, we will continue to do so on a more complex level here.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The previous guitar lesson acquainted us with the basic premise of matching the scale and chords from the same key to one another, playing an improvised melody over the changing harmonies, and trying to make it all sound as melodious and harmonious as fully pre-rehearsed music.

To do that, we recorded repeating sequences of chords from a given key over several minutes, and then attempted to find the notes from the scale which sounded the best over each chord.

This lesson will continue the same concept, but will introduce the out of key chords we learned about in Music Theory lesson 16, Secondary Dominants.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To begin, refer back to Music Theory 16, Secondary Dominants, in which we discussed how these chords are formed including notes from outside the key, and how they move smoothly and enjoyably to specific chords within the key. We also discussed creating chord sequences utilizing certain secondary dominants, specifically the Dominant which resolves to the V chord, the Dominant which resolves to the IV chord, and the Dominant which resolves to the vi chord.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's begin, for the sake of recognizable and simplistic flavor, with the Dominant which resolves to the vi chord. In this case, it would likely be more realistic to begin referring to the tonality as minor, with a different tonal center, but we'll ignore that for now, in the interests of functional practice.

Create a short chord sequence, four chords, one to each four-beat measure, which should include a Secondary Dominant which resolves or is followed by the vi chord. Perform and record it once you are comfortable playing the chords smoothly and in time, looping the pattern over the course of three to five minutes. (You can certainly go for much longer if you are truly dedicated!)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once you have this recording, attempt to perform simple, slow-moving melodies over the chords, as per the previous lesson. As before, listen to which notes sound like they fit perfectly, which notes sound like they jar slightly but are yet pleasurable or interesting, and which notes sound just kind of wrong.

As before, you will likely notice that chord tones tend to sound "right," extensions tend to sound "interesting," and avoid notes tend to sound a bit "wrong." Again, which notes sound like which to you will vary depending on your musical background, experience, and personal tastes. This should mainly be review of the previous lesson.

However, you should notice that, during the harmony of the Secondary Dominant of vi, there will be one certain note which just sounds really BAD. It doesn't sound wrong or out of place like the avoid notes from the in-key chords, it truly sounds like it shouldn't be there AT ALL. If you find that note, you have stumbled upon the note which we had to alter in order to form the out of key Secondary Dominant.

Try to, by ear, figure out which note that is that sounds so poor, and which note it is that you can replace it with to get a nice, colorful, "correct" sounding melody. In later lessons, we'll describe why and how these notes change in more detail, but for now, focus on what your "ear" tells you should be happening. If your ear doesn't like it, all the theory in the world won't force it too. And if your ear loves it, what theory-geek can possibly tell you that you are wrong?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, again, try to find, by ear, which note sound particularly wrong over the Secondary Dominant of vi, and then try to find which out of key note you can replace it with. After many trials, you should find that the note which is "wrong" is the fifth note of the major scale of the key. The note you will likely decide it should be replaced with, is a note not within the key, which lies a half-step (single fret) higher than the fifth note of the key, or perhaps more theoretically correct (for reasons we'll get to later), a half step below the sixth note of the major scale, not coincidentally the root of the chord which the dominant resolves too.

In other words, the note which sounds wrong sounds wrong because it forms a minor third with the Secondary Dominant, while the chord itself has a major third. The two thirds clash violently.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, repeat the exercise with a few other progressions in different keys, each time utilizing the secondary dominant of vi, each time trying to figure out which notes are good, which are interesting, which are a bit off, and which one is just plain wrong over the secondary dominant. Then, all by ear, try to figure out which note to replace it with. Worry about the scale-chord theory later, for now, rely on your ears to prove the theory right!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once you have become at least a little comfortable playing progressions including the Secondary Dominant of vi, move on to those including the Secondary Dominant of V, and that of IV, repeating the same exact process. In each case, you will find a note which sounds quite poor, and which can be replaced with an out of key note which will sound much more correct. If you, having decided which notes are which through your ears, refer back to the theory lessons, you should find that the two explanations are compatible.

Just a note. This may be an especially demanding lesson, and it might take you a good several weeks of diligent practice to become at all comfortable with the material here. Don't rush it!
