Guitar: Lesson 3
Basic Left Hand Linear Technique
By Zack Cart
Prerequisites:
You should be able to understand and perform the concepts and techniques outlined in the following lessons before attempting this lesson:
Guitar: Lesson 1 - Basic Geography
Guitar: Lesson 2 - Basic Right Hand Technique
Music Theory: Lesson 1 - Twelve Note Division of the Octave
Music Theory: Lesson 2 - Notation of the Seven Basic Notes
Music Theory: Lesson 3 - All Twelve Pitches - Modying the Natural Notes
Music Theory: Lesson 4 - The Simple Intervals
Music Theory: Lesson 5 - The Major Keys
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this lesson we will be learning a new technique, learning our first scale on the fretboard, and also continuing to practice the material from the last gutiar lesson.
We will be perfoming just over two octaves of the A major scale down at the end of the fret board by the head. You should already know how to derive the notes of this scale, and should also have the know-how to be able to apply these notes to the fretboard, but I will nonetheless walk you through it. If you don't feel comfortable with this, please go back and review seven lessons which are listed as prerequisites.
The notes of the A major scale are, you will remember, the same as the notes in the Key of A Major. They are merely played in alinear fashion, Begining on E, moving from one note to the next inone direction, and so landing on all seven before returning to another E.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For this excercise, we will be using only the open strings, and notes fretted in the first four frets. If we place the notes of A Major in these first four frets, in every location in which they appear, we will arrive at two octaves of the A Major scale, with a further two notes on top, for a total of two octaves plus a major third. Below is a diagram of the end of the fretboard nearest the neck. The first six frets are represented by the brass-coloured vertical lines, the nut by the leftmost grey vertical line, the fretboard by the tan background, and the strings by the horizontal black lines. Take care to orient yourself correctly and make certain that you are envisioning the diagram as a secition of fretboard with the low E string on the BOTTOM, and the high E string on TOP. The tendency may be to mentally invert the image vertically, so that it appears as a mirror image of your fret board, but instead, view it as you see the fretboard from above.
The notes of A Major are placed on the fretboard in white lettering within purple circles, exactly where you will need place your finger tip ion order to play them. Those notes which are acheived by plucking open strings are labeled directly on the nut of the guitar diagram.

You will note that neither the highest or lowest note is an A. This is unusual, generally when one plays a scale, both the starting and ending notes are the Note from which the scale derives its name. In truth, we are not strictly playing and A Major scale, but rather more of a mode of A Major known as Mixolydian. Don't worry or think any more about this for know, I mention it only to avoid future confusion as a result of current innaccuracy. For the remaindder of the lesson, we will refer to the scale we will be playing as "A Major," and ignore the technical un-specificity.
To play this scale, we will travel from bottom to top of the diagram, playing all the notes on each string from left to right, one at a time, before procceeding to the next. Once at the highest note (G#), we will then descend the scale, travelling from top to bottom, playing all the notes on each string from right to left until we reach the bottom note. Do this now visually, saying the note names to yourself.
You will note that when so doing, you encounter B twice in a row, when moving either from the G string to the B string, or vice versa. This is, in fact, the same B, and the repetition is undesireable. For now, we will play only the Bs occuring on the second fret of the A string, and as the open note of the B string, omitting the B played on the fourth fret of the G string.

The revised scale will look as follows:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, on to the actual playing!!!
Place your left hand, palm up, so that the thumb is resting at the center line of the back of the neck, just about at the level of the second fret, and the palm is cupping the underside of the neck. The fingers should be hovering over the strings and frets. To fret a note that you wish to play, place a fingertip on the string behind, or on the head-side of the fret, close to it but not quite touching it. Now gently press the string to the fretboard, by squeezing softly with that finger and your thumb. Remember, the thumb is on the centerline of the back of the neck, at the general placement of the second fret, and will remain there!
The finger which is fretting the note should be touching only with ther very tip, and should be at something near a 90 degree angle to the fretboard. This angle may become unavoidably shallower on the lower pitched strings. Try to avoid touching any strings other than the string which is being fretted.
Once you have fretted a note, pluck the string with your right hand, utilizing the technique you learned in Guitar: Lesson 2. If a clear, clean sounding note rings out and slowly dies away, you have done it correctly.
If the note buzzes or is dull, muted, and dies almost completely in a second or two, make sure that your finger is just to the neck-side of the fret, and that you are squeezing just firmly enough. (But no harder than is required) Try out a few notes, just for a minute or two.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When playing this scale, we will be assigning one fret to each finger. In other words, each finger is responsible for playing every note that occurs at a certain fret, and is forbiddden from playing those on a separate fret.
All notes played at the first fret will be fretted by the pointer finger. This means that the ONLY note that you will fret with your pointer finger is the G# on the G string.
All notes played at the second fret will be fretted with the middle finger. You will have one note on every string, which are, from lowest to highest: F#, B, E, A, C#, and F#.
All notes played at the third fret will be fretted with the ring finger. Here again, you will only have one note. This will be the D on the B string.
All notes played on the fourth fret will be played with your pinky. This will likely be quite difficult, if you are entirely new to the guitar, but the pinky is vital to your guitar toolbox, so persevere! The pinky will have four notes: G# on the low E string, C# on the A string, F# on the D string, and G# on the high E string.
All open notes, need not be fretted; the string is plucked as it lies naturally.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, slowly work your way from the low E at the bottom of the scale, to the high G# at the top of the scale, descend back to the low E, ascend again to G#, down, up, down, up...
As you practice, remember these important aspects of left hand technique.
Keep your thumb centered and at the general area of the second fret.
Squeeze or press fretted notes gently, just to the neck end of the fret, without actually touching the fret.
Your fingers should form as close to a right angle with the fret board as you can comfortably manage.
Avoid touching neighboring strings when fretting notes.
Keep the hand LOOSE!!!
Also remember these right hand tips from the previous lesson.
STRICTLY alternate fingers; middle, pointer, midddle, pointer.
The forearm should be parallel to the guitar body, and between 45 and 90 degrees to the strings.
The hand should hand comfortably around the area of the sound hole.
Kepp the hand LOOSE!!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once you feel that you have memorized the scale enough to play it evenly and cleanly in time, pull out the metronome. Set it slow, so that you can easily keep up at one note per beat/click. Play up and down the scale. As in the previous lesson, whenever you find a tempo becoming easy, speed it up a bit and try again.
After you are comfortable with one note per beat, once again practice dividing the beat. Play two notes of the scale for every beat, gradually working the metronome faster. Then four notes. Then three notes, remembering that the right hand finger pattern will alternate with every set of three notes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once the A Major scale is comfortable under your fingers and in your head, try to repeat this same methodology for the Bb Major. Here are the basic steps we followed.
Figure out the notes of Bb Major. (Refer to Music Theory: Lesson 5, if need be.
Place them at every possible location in the first four frets.
Double check to make certain that you don't have the same note occurring twice in a row. IF you do, choose the note which "fits" more easily uner your fingers.
Play the scale up and down, gradually increasing tempo, andd working through the three division of the beat we have explored thus far.
Good Luck!
